WP4

WP4…Crop modelling to profile barley ideotypes and to guide pre-breeding. (Leaders: Alessia Perego, UNIMI; Nevzat Ağrı, TEKFEN; other operational units: ENSA; CREA-GB, CSIC, UdL).

  • WP4 will improve the accuracy of current pipelines for model-aided ideotype design exploiting physiological and morphological traits (e.g. phenological stages, aboveground biomass, grain yield, canopy height, nitrogen removal, heat tolerance) measured in barley genotypes in the framework of GENDIBAR and connected projects (1.3.3) for creating achievable heat tolerant and high-yielding ideotypes. WP4 will interact with WP1, WP2 and WP3 and use field trial data to validate the performance of crop simulation models, which will be used to compare the performance of heat tolerant ideotypes, in terms of grain yield, with current barley varieties under different climate change scenarios and different agricultural management options. Moreover, WP4 will apply crop simulation models to provide new hypotheses for improving agricultural practices to adapt barley farming to climate change in different agro-ecological zones.
  • WP4 will implement a targeted pre-breeding program for initiating the introgression of: (i) relevant physiological and morphological traits using model-aided ideotype designs, (ii) interesting traits related to phenology and powdery mildew resistance and (iii) candidate genes that underlie adaptation to abiotic stresses. WP4 will interact with WP1, WP2 and WP3 to capitalize and valorize the results of these WPs and will extensively use speed breeding methodology along with marker assisted selection to accelerate the production of barley pre-breeding lines.
